Richard was the son of Robert Buckner Rainey and Levisy Crowder Rainey and the husband of Elizabeth Smith Rainey, whom he married in July 1832 in Lewisburg, TN. (Elizabeth is buried in Rehoboth Cemetery, Dyer County, RoEllen, TN.) From approximately May 1846 - June 1847 he served in the 1st Tennessee Regiment in the Mexican War. They left home May 31, 1846 and marched toward Nashville, arriving on June 2. From Nashville they went by steamer "Comme" to Smithland and then onboard the "Tennessee" to New Orleans. From there they traveled on the "E.N. Chapman" to Brazos St. Iago. After marching to the mouth of the Rio Grande and camping there for several days, they boarded the steamer "Neva" and sailed to Lometa, arriving on July 13. Apparently there was a lot of sickness, measles and fever. On August 10 their Lieutenant died so they elected a new 2d Lt. on August 11. Then they boarded the "Hachee Eagle" and sailed to Carmaga. The regiment departed on September 2, arrived at Saralvo on September 7, 1846, was at the battle of Monterey on September 21 and for several days thereafter, and at Saltillo on October 19. In 1848 they landed at Vera Cruz on March 11. The city surrendered on March 27. About April 8 they marched to Jalapa. Then after the April 18 battle of Cerre Gordo they began the journey home. On May 23, 1846 they were mustered out of United States service and then paid off on May 26. On June 2 they arrived back in Nashville where they had started one year earlier. Directions to the Bethbirei Cemetery which is located in the center of Section 35: From the center of Lewisburg, TN go northeast on US 31A, also known as the Nashville Highway, approximately 5 miles. Watch for the Old Farmington Road that closely parallels the highway on the left (northwest) side. Old Farmington almost (but not quite) merges with US 31A at the intersection with McBride Road. Turn left (northwest) onto McBride Road and then immediately turn right onto Old Farmington. Go a short distance and turn left (north) onto Bethbirei Road - follow it to the cemetery and church. | Rainey, Richard Reece (I500480)
