Obituary
Mary D. Matthews
Funeral services for Mrs. Mary D. Lassiter Matthews, 87, will be held at 11:30 A.M. Tuesday, August 2, 2005 at First Christian Church with Tom Ralstin, Minister of First Christian Church and Rev. Gene Canestrari officiating. Burial will follow in Browns Cemetery in Madison County with Lawrence-Sorensen Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Matthews died Sunday, July 31, 2005 at Elmcroft Assisted Living.
She was born in Madison County daughter of the late William P. and Delesline Givens Lassiter and was educated in the local schools and was a graduate of Lambuth University where she remained very active in the Lambuth University Alumni Association. She did post graduate work at George Peabody College in Nashville, TN. Mrs. Matthews was a member of the Bemis Book Club, Madison Hall Community Club, Madison Hall F.C.E. Club and the Delta - Alpha - Omicron Chapter of the Delta - Kappa - Gamma. She was a member of First Christian Church where she taught the Friendship Sunday School Class for 35 years. Mrs. Matthews was a retired school teacher and for the last several years of her teaching career taught Biology and Chemistry at South Side High School.
Mrs. Matthews was preceded in death by her husband Floyd V. Matthews on April 24, 1994.
Surviving are two first cousins Louise Boone of Memphis, TN and Ora Parker of Conyers, GA; nieces and nephews Isaac Lassiter of Augusta, GA, Diane Harris, Brenda Bruhn, Jane Alderson, Norris Matthews and James Matthews all of Jackson; three special friends Ken Lassiter, Maggie Nell Brewer and Richard Ellison.
The family requests that any memorials be made to Hospice of West Tennessee or First Christian Church.
Visitation with the family will be from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. today at the funeral home.
