Athens — Retired Lt. Colonel William "Bill" Anderson Sansing returned to our Heavenly Father on Monday, Feb. 7, 2011 following a lengthy and courageous battle against Melanoma. He was born to Silas Earl and Tillie Grace Murphy Sansing on June 8, 1936 in the home of his maternal grandparents "Murphy" north of Athens.
An Aggie at heart, he graduated from Texas A&M in 1958, and The University of Texas School of Law in 1960. He then entered the U.S. Air Force as an officer in the Judge Advocate General's Corps (JAG) and served his early years at Thule Air Force Base (AFB), Greenland, and then at Nellis AFB in Las Vegas, Nev. where he met his future wife, Joyce Abbott. They were married April 27, 1963 in the St. George Utah Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Bill and Joyce spent the first three years of their marriage at RAF Wethersfield in England. They moved next to Austin, where William served two assignments at Bergstrom AFB, interrupted by a remote assignment to Nakhon Phanom AFB in Thailand. Bill was later stationed at Patrick AFB in Florida (supporting Cape Canaveral), and then finished out his military career at Andrews Air Force Base, the Pentagon and other military installations in the Washington D.C. area. During his years of service, he received numerous awards.
After his retirement from the military, William and his family returned to Austin where he worked for the State of Texas as the Enforcement Coordinator for the Texas State Board of Public Accountancy, and then as Legal Counsel for the Department of Commerce.
Following his retirement from the state, he returned to Athens to build a home on family land near the site of his birth. His East Texas "retirement" consisted of an active legal practice, woodworking, gardening, and community and church service. In his final years as an attorney, he was especially focused on being an advocate for those in need.
As a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the Mormons), he served in numerous capacities, including as Bishop of the Melbourne and Satellite Beach, Florida Wards.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Silas and Tillie, and his brothers Porter Murphy Stover and Silas Earl Sansing.
He is survived by his wife of nearly 48 years, Joyce Abbott Sansing; his sister Sue Sansing of Athens; his four daughters and their husbands: Lea and Todd Giberson of Buda; Debra and Barry Woods of Oklahoma City, Okla.; Mary and Aaron Ellsworth of Mesa, Ariz.; and Rebecca and Jeffrey Adling of Sheppard AFB, Wichita Falls. He is also survived by 23 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
For those who knew William best, he will be remembered as a hard-working man of integrity who was an exceptional provider for his family, and an advocate for those in need. He had a terrific sense of humor, and a sure knowledge that this life is just one step in an eternal journey.
The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday, Feb 13 at Hannigan Smith Funeral Home, Athens. Funeral services will be held on Monday, Feb. 14, 2011 at 11 a.m. at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Athens. Interment will follow at the Athens City Cemetery with military honors.
