      SWEETWATER -- The Rev. Neal Shepherd, 78, longtime Big Country supply and interim pastor, died Saturday in a local hospital.

      Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday in Sweetwater First Baptist Church with the Revs. Cecil Deadman, Keith Clifton and Malcolm Brown, and Dr. Joel McCoy officiating. Burial will be in Sweetwater Cemetery, directed by Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home.

      Rev. Shepherd was born in Cooper and served with the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. He was a Baptist minister for 41 years until retiring in the mid-1980s and, during his tenure, either was a supply or interim pastor, or guest speaker at 138 churches that were a part of the Big Country Baptist Assembly. He also was a camp manager at the B.C.B.A. in Lueders for 14 years. He was a member of First Baptist Church.

      Survivors include his wife, Emogene Shepherd of Sweetwater; two daughters, Carolyn Shamblin of Lubbock and Betty Davis of Sweetwater; one brother, Doyle Shepherd of Lubbock; two sisters, Maurine Harlan of Littlefield and Mary Lee Taylor of Arab, Ala.; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
