Killed in Action
On a bombing mission 25 February 1944, B-17G #42-31664 departed from the air base at Foggia, Italy to a target at Regensburg, Germany. Weather was clear that day with unlimited visibility. The ship encountered enemy aircraft and was seen to break apart in the air. The plane crashed near Haarbach, south of Landshut, Germany. Several were able to bail out, however, they were captured and taken prisoner. Six men were killed from this ship including SSgt Joe D Tate, 17010267, Tail Gunner, from Linden/Cass Co TX, KIA
On this same day, six B-17s and two German twin-engined fighters crashed in the vicinity, and 58 US Airmen were either killed or taken prisoner.
