      Richard C. "Papa" Akins, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend to many, departed this earth on Saturday, April 7, 2012 after a unexpected illness. Richard was born in Fort Worth, TX on April 10, 1931. Richard is preceded in death by his loving wife of 44 years, Betty Jane Akins, a grandson, Kevin Hicks, his parents, and his five siblings. Richard is survived by his children, Diana Akins of Largo, FL, Jerry and Sandy Akins of Auburn, AL, Sheri and Danny Mendoza of Bent, NM, and Robert Akins of Rio Rancho, NM; grandchildren, Jason and Deanna Schlensig of La Luz, NM, Stephanie and Jarod Colbert of Alamogordo, NM, Dustin Lee and Stephanie Travis of Alamogordo, NM, Danielle Mendoza of Bent, NM, Chris and Kim Hicks of Little Rock, AR, Ricky H. and Zachary Akins of Auburn, AL, Christina Erbert of Albuquerque, NM, Felicia Heath of Arizona; unofficial grandson, Dave Stewart of Gypsum, CO; and his 10 great-grandchildren. Richard will also be missed by his spoiled pets, Belly, Dolly, and Dude. Richard retired from the United States Air Force after 27 years as a Chief Master Sergeant. Richard served in both the Korean War and the Vietnam Conflict. Richard also retired from Alamo Pipe after 20+ years. Richard attended Grace United Methodist Church and the Adult Sunday School Class; he was a member of the Elks, VFW, Air Force Association, Air Force Sergeants Association, and the "Old Farts Thursday Lunch Group". To many he was known as the most dedicated and loyal fan of school athletics regardless of the season, the sport, or the school. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, April 12, 2012 at Grace United Methodist Church with Rev. Mary Taken officiating. Interment will follow at Monte Vista Cemetery. The family will greet friends from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 11, 2012 at Hamilton-O'Dell Funeral Home. Should friends desire, in lieu of flowers donations may be made in the name of Richard Akins Memorial to the following organizations:
