Notes Obituary
Perry David was born on April 10, 1934 to O. D. and Vonnie Smith Coursey in Edgewood, TX.
He graduated from Pyote High School and earned a bachelor’s degree from East Texas State University. Perry completed his master’s degree from Sul Ross State University. He played football at Navarro Junior College & tennis at East Texas State University. He served in the U.S. Army from 1957-1959 and then again from 1961-1962. On August 11, 1962, Perry married the love of his life, Martha Sansing at the First United Methodist Church in Spearman, Texas.
Coach Coursey began his teaching and coaching career in Spearman, Texas where he had a state doubles championship title. He also coached tennis in Monahans, TX for 19 years. During his time with the Loboes, he had 2 doubles state champions, 1 team state championship and many individual and team state qualifiers. In 1989, he came to Monterey High School and coached tennis until he initially retired from Lubbock ISD in 1996. He was later called back to coach golf & be a tennis mentor at Lubbock High before his full retirement. During his 48 years of service, he touched the lives of many coaches, students & athletes alike. He was inducted into the Texas Tennis Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 1993; awarded the active Outstanding Coach Award from East Texas State University in 1995; and served as both the vice-president and president of the Texas Tennis Coaches Association. He had the unique blessing and privilege of coaching all 3 of his sons.
Survivors include his wife, Martha Coursey; three sons, Chris Coursey and wife, Leigh of Mansfield, TX; Corey Coursey and wife, Rosemary of Plano, TX; and Clint Coursey and wife, Carrie Coursey of Galena, OH; eight grandchildren; Tucker, Hannah, Madeline, Peyton, Raidyn, Emery, Christopher, and Phoenix; sisters, Lois Holt, Mary Downing and husband, Bert; and brothers, Harold Coursey and wife, Lynda, and Max Coursey. He also leaves a host of nieces, nephews, loving friends and a large circle of coaches & student athletes.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and a sister, Leta Von Russell.
Perry dearly loved time spent hunting and fishing with his buddies and could tell a long story or two with a little embellishment. He also loved to cook. But most of all he loved being around his family and grandkids.
The family suggests donations be made to a charity or organization of your choice in honor & remembrance of Perry.
