Obituary
Longtime Corsicana business owner R.W. "Red" Smith died Sunday, Oct. 3 in Corsicana.
Smith was born in Edgewood, Texas on Aug. 11, 1913 and later graduated from Edgewood High School. He was married to his wife Lou, on April 12, 1940.
The couple moved to Corsicana in 1945, and Smith began operating a Conoco "Service" Station on the Corner of West Seventh Avenue and 15th Street. He later took over managing a station at 1445 West Second Ave., until he retired in 1973.
While operating the service stations, Smith believed in customer service offering full service with a car vacuum, window washing and tire check with complete service.
After retiring in 1973, he often helped his son, Phil Smith, who owns a local pharmacy, by delivering prescriptions and with general help around the store. In 1990, he finally "retired" to spend his time at home with his family.
Smith was very active in the Corsicana community serving on the Administrative Board at the First United Methodist Church and several committees at the church. He was his Sunday school president and a regular usher for early services. He also helped prepare food for the couples' class on Wednesday evenings.
He also served on the Board of Directors at the House of Refuge where he volunteered and helped when needed. According to family members, he called it his "pet project," but volunteered many hours of time.
Smith also was very active in the Kiwanis Club where he was a chartered member.
Survivors include his wife, Lou Smith of Corsicana; one son and daughter-in-law, Phil and Nancy Smith of Corsicana; two grandsons, Chris and Stuart Smith, both of Corsicana; and three sisters, Vonnie Coursey of Pyote, Dorothy Goodwin of Fort Worth and Virginia Hughes of Dallas.
Corley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
