      D. M. McKinley was born in North Carolina, November 8, 1842. Died at Oplin, Texas, April 7, 1926. Aged 83 years. "Grand-dad," as he was called by everyone, was of the old Southern type, and loved to talk of the by-gone days. He served in the Civil War from 1862 until the close of the war, in 1865, enlisted at the age of 18 years in the Seventh Infantry, Colonel Gregg's Command. Captain J. Williams Brown Company. He was in several battles and wounded at Ft. Donnelson. Mr. McKinley came to Texas in 1853 and settled in Gregg County, Moving to Eastland County after the war and to Callahan County in 1917, he made his home near Rising Star, while in Eastland County. He married Miss Fannie Smith in 1878 and seven children were born to them, one died in infancy. The children are: W. C. McKinley of Melrose, New Mexico, J. E. and G. E. McKinley of Oplin, Texas; Mrs. T. G. Culwell of Okra, Texas; Mrs. W. W. Norris of Handley Texas; Mrs. C. E. Rutherford of Baird, Texas. He had 48 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

At 18 years of age he joined the Presbyterian Church and was a member until he was 54 years old and then joined the Christian Church. This faith he retained at his death. "Grand-dad" will be missed in our Oplin Community. The incidents of his life were interesting. A few more years and all that will be left of the boys that wore the gray and fought under the Stars and Bars will be their history and the marble slab that marks their last resting place. Mr. McKinley was buried in Oplin Cemetery. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Dick Bright.
