    • Served in the Confederate Army in Alabama, in Company A, 56th Alabama Calvalry as a Private and was discharged in April 1865.  Hs wife Amanda claimed a motnhly pension September 23, 1912 for being a widower of John Hunter Smith.  John enlisted in April of 1862 in Montgomery County, Alabama and was separated in April 1865 in Greensboro, North Carolina (end of hostilities and the U.S. Civil War).  Amanda gave $25/month to whoever she was living with.  Amanda also lived in the Confederate Home in Austin, Texas for a few months in 193 (discharged on August 1).  She was sent there for better care than what she was getting with her children and their families; however, she caused such a stir at the home that they ordered Perry Spurgeon Smith (her son) to come get her and take her back.  She was picked up by Perry and Raymond Leon Jones (Julia Elizabeth "Lizzie" SMITH and Luther Theodore Jones's youngest son and Perry's nephew).

John Hunter, his parents, and his brothers apparently all moved to Alabama sometime between 1845 and 1849.  In the 1850 Census taken on November 12th, John H. is listed in the household of William (45) Smith in Tallapoosa County, Alabama.  (NOTE:  The Mary R. (26) is NOT believed to be John Hunter Smith's mother Mary SNIDER Smith, as Mary SNIDER Smith died in 1837.  This is actually John Hunter Smith's older sister.)  This Census record places John H's birth between November 13, 1833 and November 12, 1834 in Georgia.  We know from our own family records that John Hunter Smith's birthday was January 22, 1834 which fits the 1850 Census Record.  The 1845-1849 move date is calculated by looking at the change of birthplace in William and Mary R.'s youngest children (Westley, age 4 born in Georgia and Benjamin L. age 1 born in Alabama) on the 1850 Census.  John Hunter Smith's 1860 Census record in Autauga County, Alabama notes him as an overseer living in the R. P. Houser family's home.  The Houser's were good friends - and likely relatives - of the Murph family and lived nearby John Henry and Jane E. STOUDENMIRE Murph in the Dutch Bend area.  Following William Bryant Smith backwards (pre-1950), we find them in Coweta County in the early to mid-1830s based on well-documented accounts of his father (Nathan Smith) and brothers/sisters.  In these accounts at some point William Bryant Smith becomes estranged or distant from the family after his marriage to Mary SNIDER and their move from Wilkes County to Coweta County.  He is not mentioned in the will of Nathan Smith as they had no idea of his whereabouts according to the accounts.  Georgia land (tax) records for a William B. Smith are present for the following:

1827 (Pike County, Captain Shim Thompson's District) - 202-1/2 acres along the Flint River, adjoining the Embry property.

William B. Smith is listed in the 1830 Census for Coweta County, GA.  Based on this in comparison to the 1850-1880 Census information and family trees, this accounts for William Bryant Smith (born in 1802, Male 20-29yo), His Spouse (presumably Mary SNYDER Smith born in about 1800-1810, Female 20-29yo), James T. Smith (Male 5-9yo), Nathaniel E. Smith (Male 5-9yo), Joseph T. Smith (Male <5yo), Elizabeth A. Smith (Female <5yo), Mary R. Smith (Female <5yo).

For this reason, we are marking John's birthplace as being in Coweta County, Georgia.  ***FURTHER RESEARCH IS NEEDED TO PLACE WILLIAM BRYANT'S LAND/PROPERTY RECORDS HISTORY IN GEORGIA AND ALABAMA***
