Obituary
BELMONT - William A. "Dolphus" Clingan, 83, died Friday, March 21, 2003, at his home. He was born Dec. 10, 1919, in Belmont to William Hosea Clingan and Laurie Bridges Clingan. He attended Valley School and Belmont High School and entered the Civil Conservation Corp in 1939, where he served in Alabama building wooden fire towers. He volunteered for the U.S. Navy in 1940 and was in active duty when World War II began in 1941. He married Dora Lee Twitty in 1942, then left for service in the South Pacific Theater until 1944. The Clingans lived in San Diego, Calif., from 1944 to 1946. He left the Navy in 1946 with the rank of Chief Petty Officer. He farmed in the Valley community until he reenlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1951 during the Korean War. During this time he decided to continue his career in the Navy. He served in Tennessee, Florida, Virginia and Washington, and aboard ship in the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, and the Mediterranean and Caribbean seas. He flew as a crew member in the A-3 Skywarrior attack bombers. He retired from the U.S. Navy while aboard the USS Forrestal in 1964 with the rank of Senior Chief Petty Officer. After retirement, he and his family returned to the farm in the Valley community. He worked as a mechanic for Blue Bell Inc. in Belmont, then taught metal trades at the Tishomingo County Vocational Center for 12 years. He also taught metal working skills during his Navy career. After retiring from teaching, he and his wife enjoyed traveling, fishing, and flower and vegetable gardening. They attended Old Union Baptist Church in the Valley community.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Dora Lee, on Dec. 18, 2000.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Deaton Funeral Home Chapel in Belmont with the Rev. Dennis Wellington and the Rev. David Gould officiating. Burial will be in Old Union Cemetery.
Survivors include a daughter, Sharion Lucius and husband, Dwight, of Belmont; two sons, Jerry Clingan and wife, Mary, of Federal Way, Wash., and Jeff Clingan and wife, Emma Lou, of Fulton; a sister, Ruby Byram of Belmont; seven grandchildren, Regina Midgett, Melanie Clingan and Will Clingan, all of Fulton, Timothy Lucius of Starkville, Michelle Clingan Wait of Saltillo, and Jonathan Clingan and Christopher Clingan, both of Federal Way, Wash.; a great-granddaughter, Sidney Leigh Midgett of Fulton.
Pallbearers will be Timothy Lucius, Jonathan Clingan, Christopher Clingan, Roy Midgett, Sam Wait and Scott Mathis.
Visitation will be at the funeral home from 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday and until service time Monday.
