Our loving father and grandfather, David C. Miles, 79, of Waco, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2008 after a long struggle with diabetes. Mr. Wesley Dixon will be officiating the memorial services at 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 5, at the Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Killeen, with burial to follow.

David was born in Carbondale, Ill., to the late Herbert Courtney Miles and Augustine Louise (This) Miles. During the Korean War, he served his country in the U.S. Navy on the U.S.S. DeHaven, one of six destroyers to be "sitting ducks" in the Battle of Inchon.

David believed in education and dedicated his life to learning and teaching. He received his Bachelor of Science at Sul Ross State College in Alpine, Texas, his Master of Arts at Adams State College of Colorado in Alamosa, Colo., and his doctoral studies in Education Administration at Colorado State College in Greeley.

While getting his education, he taught high school in Texas then Colorado. He implemented House Bills 1060 and 1164 in the Handicapped Children's Education Act. He also developed the Wesley White Center in Julesburg, Colo., which was the first county residential school for severely handicapped children in Colorado. He received many professional awards including the Annual Award of the Colorado State Federation of the Council for Exceptional Children-in recognition of Outstanding Contributions and Pioneering Service in Special Education, in 1975. After retiring from the State of Colorado, he became a Commercial Real Estate Broker and owned several small businesses.

Preceding him in death was his wife, Lois L. Miles; and a step-daughter, Linda Tough.
