Obituary
Matthew E. Wilde
Matthew Eldridge Wilde, 88, of River's Edge Retirement Center on Waters Avenue, died Monday, July 18, 2005 at Hospice Savannah. Mr. Wilde was born on July 10, 1917, in Central Village, Connecticut. He was the son of Ernest and Edith Eyers Wilde. He graduated from Plainfield High School in 1934 before enrolling in the US Army Air Corp. He served from 1942-1946 as an airplane mechanic. During this time he was stationed at Hunter Army Air Field in Savannah. He received an honorable discharge as Staff Sergeant and an American Campaign Medal, W.W. II Victory Medal and a Good Conduct Medal. Mr. Wilde married Rosa Mae Kessler from Rincon, GA., in 1945. They lived in Savannah until 1953, then moved to Garden City. Mr. Wilde was a plumber by trade and was a member of the GA., Plumbing Inspectors Assoc., Inc. He also worked as Planner and Estimator for Civil Service and retired after 20 years at Parris Island Marine Corp Base. After retirement from Civil Service, he served many years as the Plumbing and Fire Inspector for Garden City. Mr. Wilde was active in the community and was honored by WTOC in its "Hometown Heroes" segment and was the recipient of the first annual "Spirit of the Westside Good Samaritan Award". Mr. Wilde was a lifelong volunteer fireman, joining the Plainfield Fire Dept., at the age of 17 and continuing with the Garden City Volunteer Fire Dept., until the age of 84. During his service as a fireman he held all possible positions, including Fire Chief for 3 years. In 2001, a new fire truck was dedicated to him for his loyal service to the Fire Dept. Mr. Wilde was an active member of the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church for over 40 years where he served on the Church Council, as Sunday School Teacher and Superintendent and Lay Preacher. He was a 50 year Mason of the Acacia Lodge 452 F & AM. Mr. Wilde is survived by two daughters and son-in-law, Julie Rose Wilde of Savannah, and Lucy Wilde Warren and Blakely T. Warren of Maitland, FL; two grandsons, Matthew Blakely Warren and Nicholas David Warren of Maitland, FL; two sisters, Rosemond Edith Anderson of Central Village, Conn., and Elizabeth Frances Crouch of Groton, Conn. and 24 nieces and nephews. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, July 19, 2005 at the funeral home. Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 20, 2005 at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Garden City. Interment: Jerusalem Lutheran Church Cemetery in Rincon.
