STILSON — Mrs. Ida Idell Helmly Knight, age 92, died Friday evening, July 20th, 2012, at her residence under the care of Ogeechee Area Hospice. Mrs. Knight was born in Rincon, Georgia to Carl and Minnie Helmly. Before she married Calhoun Knight on Jan. 18, 1949, she was a riveter and welder at Steel Products that later became Great Dane, and later worked in the lab of Southern Cotton Oil Company.
She continued to work after her marriage and later stayed home to care for her growing family. Following her husband's death in 1967, she was left to raise her four children, ages 2 to 15, a monumental task as the youngest child was a special needs child. She was always grateful for the support that she received from her family and church family. This carried her through many trying and difficult times. Throughout her life Mrs. Knight worked tirelessly. Whenever she was not caring for her daughter and other children, she was busy picking up and shelling pecans, putting up vegetables, attending church and preparing delicious meals for her family and anyone else who had the opportunity to sit at her table. In later years she decided to work as caregiver and cared for many people in the community. She always said she "sat with old people", but most of the patients were older than she. She will be greatly missed. The Effingham County native lived in the Stilson Community most of her life and was a member of the Lanes Primitive Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Calhoun Knight and a son Wayne Knight.
Surviving are a daughter, Donna Knight of Lyons; two sons and daughters-in-law, Winton and Larissa Knight of Bloomingdale and Perry and Genie Knight of Stilson; four grandchildren, Ricky Knight of Stilson, Lisa Smoak of Meldrim, Brianna Hendley of Pooler and Caroline Knight of Bloomingdale; three great grandchildren, Ansley Knight and Jeb and Ellie Smoak; two sisters, Dorine Hinely of Port Wentworth and Betty Charron of Savannah and a brother, Robert Helmly of Rincon.
Funeral services will be Tuesday at 11:00am at Lanes Primitive Baptist Church with Elder Lee Chambers, Wade McElveen and Glenn McDaniel officiating. The body will lie-in-state at the church one hour prior to the service.
Interment will be in the church cemetery.
