Jacob was born in Lincoln County, North Carolina. His father, John Gottlieb, had served in the Revolutionary War and was among the American troops under Gen. George Washington at Yorktown when the British surrendered. Relatives and friends had fled the British occupation of Georgia and were living in North Carolina. Georgia began awarding land to compensate for loss during the British occupation. To receive land, a person had to have been a resident a year. The extended family returned to Georgia by 1793 and a about a year later, Jacob's father was awarded land in Wilkes County, Georgia. Jacob married Elizabeth Cone and they made their home in Washington County. Jacob won land in Coweta County in the Georgia Land Lottery. His oldest son, John G. headed west to check it out, returned home to marry Susan Whitaker, or she may have been visiting relatives in Coweta County. They lived in Coweta County until her death. John G. remarried and moved south to Schley County.
Jacob's son, William, married Lucinda, moved to Warren County, and died in 1841 leaving two small children. Daughter, Nancy, married Johnnie Freeman Avant and died in her thirties. Son, Thomas B., first married Irene Horton then Mary B. Veal, had a son, Isham. Sons, Levi and Abel Michael, may have been casualties of the Civil War.
