Obituary
Gay Staples Lowery passed away peacefully on December 21, 2016. She was born on March 2, 1946 in Greenville, Texas, the daughter of Ernest Orion Staples and Patsy Clindining Staples. Gay graduated from Richardson High School and attended Tyler Junior College. She met her husband, Roger Lowery, of 50 years, while in college. After marrying, the couple moved to Gadsden, Alabama where Roger was an industrial engineer at the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company, and Gay was the president of the Goodyear Women’s Association. With Goodyear, they were transferred to Madisonville, Kentucky and then on to Hudson, Ohio where Gay worked as a manager and buyer for the Pappagallo women’s boutique. In 1980, Gay, Roger, and their two children returned to live in Tyler. Gay started an antique business named The Abbey, and sold antiques in Tyler and at First Monday, in Canton. She enjoyed traveling abroad and especially visiting England to purchase antiques for her business. First and foremost, Gay was a devoted mother and always put her family first. She was an active volunteer and over the years gave her time to the Texas Rose Festival, Symphony League, Cattle Baron’s Gala, Robert E. Lee Booster Club, PTA and her Garden Club. Gay was also a member of the First Presbyterian Church and Willow Brook Country Club. Gay is survived by her mother, Patsy Staples; her husband, Roger; and her daughter, Allison and son, Drew. Allison and her husband Byron live in Largo, Florida. Drew and his wife, Laurie live in Sugarland, Texas. Gay has four grandchildren, whom she adored, Caroline, Claire, Luke, and Peyton. She is also survived by her brother and sister-in-law, Tom and June Lowery; nephew, Chris; and cousin, Vickie Cantwell. A private burial will be held on Wednesday, December 28, 2016 at Rose Hill Cemetery under the direction of Stewart Family Funeral Home. Memorial services will be held on Wednesday, December 28, 2016 at 2:00 PM at the First Presbyterian Church, located at 230 W. Rusk Street, Tyler, TX 75701 with The Rev. Dr. Stuart Baskin officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Tyler, 230 W. Rusk St., Tyler, TX 75701, or to any charity he or she chooses.
