  Obituary   LON HAROLD MOSS, 90, of Washington, formerly of Cross Junction, VA, died Monday, January 26, 2004, in Donnell House, Washington, following a brief illness. He was born April 25, 1913 near Warrior, AL, a son of Fred Sr. and Inez Miller Moss. Known to friends as "Harold", Mr. Moss worked for more than 35 years with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), primarily in senior leadership positions on a range of foreign assignments that involved consultation with foreign governments on national tax policies. From 1948 to 1951, at the personal request of Gen. Douglas McArthur, the supreme allied commander in charge of the reconstruction of Japan, Mr. Moss led a high-level delegation that developed a sweeping new tax policy for Japan. In his final IRS assignment, Mr. Moss was the executive secretary of Inter-American Center of Tax Administrators, an international organization that actively promoted innovative tax policies throughout Latin America. In his IRS career, his assignments took him on extended tours of duty in the Philippines, South Korea and Europe, as well as shorter stints to India, Africa and the Middle East. In World War II, Mr. Moss joined the US Navy, where he served as a naval intelligence officer and a naval aviator. He served in the south Pacific at the end of the war. Following his government career, Mr. Moss engaged in a range of real estate and agricultural activities in Frederick County, VA. Surviving are his wife, Mildred Mabbett Moss, formerly of Quitman, GA; two sons, Sheldon Moss of Venetia and Douglas Moss of Torrance, CA; also two grandchildren. Deceased are two brothers, Ralph and Fred Jr. and a sister, Elizabeth. A Memorial Service will be held in Redlands United Methodist Church, Cross Junction, followed by interment in Shenandoah Memorial Gardens in Winchester, VA.
