Obituary
"Mary Kathryn Nelson Brown, 84 Mary Kathryn Nelson Brown, 84, of Lyons died Sunday evening, June 1, 2003, in the Bethany Nursing Center of Vidalia after an extended illness. She was born in 1918 in Glennville. She was the daughter of the late Lee Roy and Mary Elizabeth Nelson of Reidsville, graduated from the Georgia State College for Women and taught school in Lyons. During WWII she was employed by McDonnell Aircraft in St. Louis, MO, and assisted engineers who designed the first jet airplane by performing various mathematical calculations. A devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, she was widely known for her friendliness and outgoing nature and one who truly strove to make people feel special and loved. Mrs. Brown was a member of the First Baptist Church of Lyons and a member of the Lyons Garden Club. She was married to Robert "Bob" Jordan Brown who preceded her in death. She is survived by her sons, Robert Jordan Brown, Jr., and Ray Nowlin Brown; one sister, Beth Nelson Broome; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held on Wednesday morning, June 4, 2003, at 11:00 a.m. at First Baptist Church of Lyons with Rev. Grady Walden officiating. Interment followed in the Lyons City Cemetery."
