Obituary

It was perfect ending to a wonderful story. Having spent the last 72 years as partners in discovery, and having travelled the globe exploring the mystery of life, Julia and Ledford Carter have embarked upon another journey. Julia left the shores of this life on June 4, 2012, and Ledford followed on June 6, 2012.

Julia “Duba” Patterson (Sewell) Carter was born in Atlanta, Georgia, August 31, 1917, the daughter of Frank Anderson and Julia Marsh (Patterson) Sewell. As a child learning to speak, she was unable to pronounce “Julia,” so she called herself, “Duba,” the name by which she was thereafter known to family and friends. Julia was 8 years old when her mother died, and she, along with her older sister and father, joined an extended family in nearby Decatur, Georgia. Four years later, her father remarried and moved his family back to Atlanta where Julia’s younger sister and brother were born.

Julia graduated from Girls High School in Atlanta and Agnes Scott College in Decatur. Her hobbies were book collecting, for which she won a college prize, and acting with the Atlanta Theatre Guild. She enjoyed trips to New York to see plays. She was an avid reader and an accomplished costume designer, for which she was a finalist in Vogue’s contest for a year’s study in Paris. After college she was employed by J.P. Allen, Atlanta’s prestigious dress shop, an experience that prepared her for teaching in the Federal Distributive Education Program of Lanier High School in Montgomery, Alabama. While in Montgomery, she became engaged to Ledford Carter whom she had dated before his voluntary enlistment in the U.S. Army.

Ledford Carter was born August 6, 1916, in Meigs, Georgia, the son of Otto and Ola Belle (Duren) Carter. Following his marriage to “Duba” in June of 1940, the newlyweds relocated to Lawton, Oklahoma where Ledford received his commission as an Army officer. After short tours of duty in Macon, Georgia; Wichita Falls, Texas; and Lawton, Oklahoma, Lt. Carter was ordered to the Pacific Theater. While separated by the war, “Duba” lived with her parents in Atlanta, where their son Robert was born just two weeks before his father returned in January 1946 upon separation from military service. The Carter family lived in Athens, Georgia from 1947 to 1951 where Ledford worked for the Southern Educational Film Production Service. They then moved to Bloomington, Indiana where Ledford joined the staff of Indiana University. He taught courses in educational motion picture production and writing for educational media at Indiana University from 1954 until his retirement as Professor of Education Emeritus in 1981. Concurrently, as a production supervisor in the Audio-Visual Center, he was responsible for the production of approximately 70 short documentary and educational films that have been seen by more than 1 million people.

Ledford retired from the U.S. Army in 1976 with the rank of lieutenant colonel, having served 35 years in active and reserve duty. He served as president of the University Club, the Theatre Circle, The Unitarian Universalist Church, and the Residents’ Council of the Meadowood Retirement Community. He also served terms on the board of directors of the Monroe County Historical Society, the Bloomington chapter of the National Society of Arts and letters, the Unitarian Universalist Church, the Meadowood Retirement Community and the Meadowood Memorial Fund. He was a member of Phi Delta Kappa, national honorary fraternity in education; Alpha Psi Omega, national honorary dramatics fraternity; and Pi Kappa Phi social fraternity. He was preceded in death briefly by his wife Julia “Duba” Carter; a son, Robert L. Carter; a sister, Anarah (Carter) Shilkaitis; and brother, Wendall Carter.

Kevin Phelps Moore, age 57, passed away on Saturday, January 20, 2018.

A lifelong resident of Grenada, Mississippi, Kevin graduated from Kirk Academy in 1978.  After graduating from the University of Mississippi in 1982 with a B.S. in Business Administration, Kevin began a career in investment banking which spanned the next 30 years.  By his side all the way was his wife of 34 years, Pamela Lyons Moore.  Kevin and Pam's family include their daughter Lauren and her husband, Wade Broyles, of Madison, MS; daughter Emily and her husband, Chris Haynes, of Birmingham, Alabama; daughter Meredith Moore of Grenada, MS and grandchildren Lyla Kate Broyles and Adalynn Grace Haynes. The family is also awaiting the arrival of grandson Bowen Wade Broyles. Other family members who will continue to miss Kevin include his mother Mrs. Mary Belle Moore of Oxford; 2 sisters, Ruth Davis (Neill) of Houston, Texas and Mary Green (Stan) of Brandon, MS; and 2 brothers; Walt Moore (Jerilou) of Oakland, MS, and Edward Moore (Dawn) of Columbia, TN. His father, Walter Vernon Moore, Sr. and his brother, Lee Forrest Moore, preceded Kevin in death.

One word comes to mind when describing Kevin, and that word is backbone: the chief support, the mainstay, and cornerstone.  Kevin was all of these and more.  He was the tower of strength for his family, church, and business, and also for his community.  Grenada, along with his family and friends, has lost a pillar that will not soon be forgotten.

Kevin began his professional career in 1987 joining the Sunburst Financial Group.  This career took him through mergers of Union Planters Financial Services, PFIC Securities and Morgan Keegan until he opened in 2013 the office of Moore-Branscome Wealth Management, a division of Raymond James.

Kevin was a man with a servant’s heart and his commitment to the community was evident through his involvement in various organizations. He served 10 years on the Board of Directors for the Grenada Education Foundation for Kirk Academy.  He was a 30-year member of the Kiwanis Club serving as president and as the Lt. Governor for District 1-A of North Mississippi.  He was currently serving as president-elect of the organization. He has been instrumental as co-chairman of the Grenada Community Foundation in efforts to revitalize the Grenada downtown. He is a member of the North Mississippi Emmaus Community and has served Emmanuel Baptist Church as a deacon, an usher, and on various other committees.

A service to celebrate his life will be held at 3:00 PM Tuesday, January 23, 2018 at Emmanuel Baptist Church in Grenada with Rev. Eugene Heimbach, Dr. Brent Barker and Dr. Clarence Cooper officiating.  Interment will follow in the Woodlawn Memorial Park.  The family will receive friends from 12:00 PM until service time Tuesday at Emmanuel Baptist Church.

Memorials may be directed to Emmanuel Baptist Church, Grenada Community Foundation, or Kiwanis Club.

Online condolences may be expressed to the family at www.mckibbenandguinn.com.

Arrangements have been entrusted to McKibben and Guinn Funeral Service in Grenada.

Millie Akins, 95, of St.Petersburg, died at home on Saturday, June 4th, 2011 in the loving care of Hospice and her family. Millie was born on May 6, 1916 in Whitewright, Texas, the daughter of Celia and Warner Adcock. The family moved to Atlanta in 1919 where she attended public schools and the Atlanta extension of the University of Georgia, Athens. She married J. C. Akins in 1936 and continued to work until beginning their family. They moved to the family farm in Doraville, Georgia, in 1941 where she honed her skills as a homemaker. As a member of The Home Demonstration Club, she taught and practiced frugal home economics raising five children on home grown meat and vegetables.
In 1951 her husband accepted the position as circulation manager of the Evening Independent and the family moved to St. Petersburg. J. C.'s love of sports cars led him to building Presto Car Wash in 1958, built on a shoestring and a prayer. The two, working together, managed a very successful business. They were forced to sell the carwash because of her husband's bout with cancer. In order to fulfill a dream the two took the opportunity to tour Europe together in 1963. After a brief return to Atlanta and the assurance his cancer was cured, the couple returned to St. Petersburg and renewed their pursuit of their goals in the carwash business. They built the El Dorado Car Wash in Tampa and enjoyed overwhelming success. As a consequence they enjoyed their companionship with other owners through their membership in the Southeastern Carwash Ass'n. and the International Car Wash Ass'n. It allowed them to travel extensively throughout the country. They built a mountaintop retreat, Foxwood, in North Carolina. Millie enjoyed her friends through her membership in Sinawik and other civic endeavors. She expressed her Devotion to God through her faithful attendance at the First United Methodist Church. She particularly enjoyed teaching Sunday school and participating in the Rebecca Circle.
