Obituary

David Lowell Jordan left this Earth to be with our Lord on January 10, 2019. David placed his love of family and his faith in God above all else. He was a loving husband, wonderful father, and mischievous prankster.
David was born on December 3, 1928, in San Antonio, Texas to Jerome Iredell Jordan and Minnie Jewell Morris Jordan. He would often tell stories of great times in San Antonio with his siblings, Jimmy, Buddy, Margie and Wayne, including catching a tarantula so large that the Witte Museum placed it in their collection. He attended public schools in San Antonio, graduating from Thomas Jefferson High School in 1947.
After graduating, David attended Arlington State College before transferring in 1949 to the University of Texas at Austin where he gained such a love for burnt orange that much of his wardrobe and many of his blankets, hats and socks are still adorned with that color and the great Longhorn logo. Wanting to serve his country, David enrolled in Army ROTC and earned his officer’s commission. He interrupted his studies (and plenty of shenanigans - many of which were as a member of Beta Theta Pi) for two tours of duty in Korea. Not satisfied with serving his country only on the ground, David volunteered as a paratrooper, becoming qualified as a jumpmaster and a platoon leader. 1st Lt. Jordan was a proud member of the 82nd Airborne Division and 45th Infantry Division, being awarded two Bronze Svc. Stars. He was honorably discharged and continued as a Captain in the Army Reserve. Returning to Austin, David completed his studies and received his Bachelor of Business Administration from UT in 1955. Upon receiving his degree, David worked as a salesman with U.S. Gypsum from 1955 to 1957.
David’s world changed forever in the spring of 1956, when on a Methodist retreat in Glen Rose, Texas, he spied a beautiful young woman playing ping pong. Apparently stricken by her, David pursued this young lady first by impressing her with his table tennis skills, and then summoning the courage to ask her out. Their first date was a double date picnic with David’s brother Buddy and Buddy’s future wife Margaret. It was not their last. David married the love of his life, Joy Tynelle Sansing, on February 8, 1958 in Spearman, Texas. David and Tynelle honeymooned by driving in two separate cars to their new home in Lafayette, Louisiana where David had taken a position as a landman with the company that would come to be known as Atlantic Richfield, or ARCO.
David and Tynelle were married for over 60 years. Their firstborn, Amy Cecile, arrived in 1960, followed soon by Gregory David in 1961, Laurie Lynne in 1964 and Michael Brian in 1967. David was a devoted father, spending untold hours with his children at swim meets, football games and speech tournaments, and always taking the time to vacation and build memories with his family – including annual ski trips and a five week driving trip, which all family members fortunately survived, pulling an old camper from Portland, Texas to Sequoia National Park. Much to the chagrin of the spouses of Amy, Greg, Laurie and Michael, David’s sense of humor lives on.
David found his true calling when working as a landman for ARCO for 25 years and later with Hanson Energy until he retired. He enjoyed what he did so much that he told Tynelle he never felt like he was really working. Having a powerful work ethic, David said he might not be the smartest, but that no one would outwork him. In retirement, David and Tynelle spent numerous summers in Colorado and traveled around the world together, often with their children and grandchildren. David and Tynelle were members of Berachah Church in Houston for many years and have thanked God for all he has provided.
David loved a good joke, often telling colorful ones that probably don’t belong in an obituary. Known for a thrifty streak, when confronted with an opportunity to spend cash, David was not reluctant to remind his family that “frugality is the mother of virtue” and that “a fool and his money are soon parted.” But perhaps the most important and telling words ever spoken by David were those in his last hours on this Earth. Even though he was in the hospital, very ill and near the time he would go to join his Maker, in essentially his last words on this planet David summed up his 60 year love story when he gathered what strength he had left, turned to Tynelle and said, “I love you.”
David is survived by the apple of his eye and wife of over 60 years, Joy Tynelle Sansing Jordan; daughter Amy Jordan Munro of Ashland, Oregon; son Gregory David Jordan and his wife Amy of Austin, Texas; daughter Laurie Jordan Severson and her husband Craig of St. Louis, Missouri; son Michael Brian Jordan and his wife Karen of Cincinnati, Ohio; granddaughters Laura Jordan Munro, Clara Joy Munro, Emily Ann Jordan Gold and her husband Ryan, Sarah Catherine Jordan, Ellen Elizabeth Jordan, and Erin Catherine Jordan; grandsons George Andrew Munro and his wife Trisha, Isaac Jordan Severson, William David Jordan, and Samuel Browning Severson; brother James R. Jordan of Dallas, Texas; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Effingham Herald, May 20, 1998, Rincon, GA

Louise Wendelken Hinley [Hinely], 78, of Rincon died Thursday May 14, at Memorial Medical Center from injuries resulting from an automobile accident. Mrs. Hinley [Hinely] was a lifetime resident of Effingham County, an Avon representative for 30 years, and a homemaker. She was a member of Goshen United Methodist Church and the widow of Vernon C. Hinley [Hinely]. Survivors are two sisters, Kathleen Fail and Juanita Rahn of Rincon; one brother, Stanley Wendelken of Rincon; two aunts, Mrs. Mary Sapp of Rincon and Miss Mattie Wendelken of Fernandina Beach, Fla.; and many nieces and nephews. Pallbearers were Paul Wendelken, Jody Seckinger, Robert Wendelken, Will Wendelken, Thomas Hinley [Hinely] and Richard Priester. Burial was in Goshen United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Savannah Morning News, Wednesday, May 20, 1998, page 3C
For more than 30 years, Louise Hinely was known as Rincon's Avon Lady. Thursday, 12 days after a car in which she had been riding was hit at the intersection of McCall Road and the Springfield bypass, the 78-year-old lifelong Effingham resident died from her injuries at Memorial Medical Center.....Nephew Paul Wendelken remembered Hinely as a kind, unselfish woman who was a devoted wife to the late Vernon C. Hinely, for whom Rincon's community center is named. She put aside her Avon sales, at least in part, to devote more time to caring for her husband as his health failed during the last several years of his life. "For the last year of his life after he had gone to the nursing home, she was at his side every day," Wendelken said. "It became pretty much like her occupation. She would go up to see him in the mornings and leave in the evening." She was a passenger in the car that pulled onto the Springfield bypass from McCall Road at about 9 p.m. May 2, taking a left turn toward Rincon. She and the driver, another elderly woman to whom she was related, were on their way back from visiting a relative in Springield....

George William “Billy” James Jr. died Tuesday September 22, 2015 at North Louisiana Medical Center from heart failure.

Billy was born in Ruston, La on October 20, 1932 to George William (Bill) James and Sarah Ann (Tai) Bond. He graduated from LA Polytechnic Institute (LA Tech University) as a Civil Engineer in 1952.

Billy is survived by his high school sweetheart and wife of 63 years, the former Evelyn Elaine Van Hook, of Ruston; their six children and spouses: Billy and Shai James of Metairie, David and Jeanne James of Baton Rouge, Mark and Alison James of Metairie, Bob and Lesley James of Ruston, Jeff and Mia James of Baton Rouge and Jim and Ginger Halford of Whitehouse, TX. He is also survived by sixteen grandchildren: Shannon Roberts and husband Marshall, Staci Kearney and Husband Dan, G.W. “Will” James IV; Sally, William and Carter James; Mark Jr., John, Paul and Peter James; Bobby, Shep and Hayes James; Catherine James; James and Jack Halford and two great grandchildren, Grayson and Reese Roberts. He was preceded in death by his parents, Bill and Sarah James, his brother Bobby James, and his grandson David M. James, Jr.

Pallbearers will be Billy’s thirteen (13) grandsons.

Billy was well known around Ruston and LA Tech circles for his quick smile and his considerate nature for others. Billy was also well known in the construction business for his leadership of T.L. James & Company, one of the south’s largest family owned construction businesses. He was a pioneer in the highway paving business helping to usher in the modern freeway and interstate highway system and led the privatization of the Federal Hopper Dredge Fleet in the late-seventies.

Billy worked as the highway paving manager for TL James & Company as the early interstate highways were first being constructed. He moved frequently in the early years following the concrete paving work; Ohio, Kansas, and Mississippi were early stops before Billy and Evelyn moved back to Ruston to build US Interstate Highway 20 from Calhoun through Ruston to Haughton where the highway ended and switched back to US Highway 80 for many years. During his career, Billy’s paving crews paved over one mile of concrete highway on three different projects, in three different states, on the same day- a feat that has seldom, if ever been duplicated since.

Billy was elected President of T.L. James & Company in 1973 when he was 41years old. In addition to the highway paving business, the family-owned construction company was well known and respected as one of the largest contractors in the south. The James Company managed construction projects including river levees, hydro-electric dams, river locks, large span river bridges, and tunnels. Billy presided over the company during a period of extraordinary growth as it tripled in size. Although T.L. James Company was mostly known for the tremendous amount of street and highway work it performed, the James Company also built and maintained the second largest dredge fleet in the world, known for its channel and harbor dredging and ocean going hopper dredging fleet. The Company also performed real estate development, timber harvesting, oil &gas production, and commercial building construction.

Billy prided himself on knowing his workers and their jobs. He was known to always recognize those he worked with and call them by name, even if he hadn’t seen them in years. Although Billy had many good friends from all walks of life, one of his fondest memories was the recent trip to rural Mississippi where he visited one of his mechanics from the 1960s. They both had broad smiles on their faces as they swapped stories about the ‘good ole days’.
In 2013 Billy retired from T.L. James & Company Board of Directors retaining the title Director Emeritus, having served his family business for 58 years. Billy served as President of the Company from 1973 until 1987 and was elected Chairman of the Board of Directors of TL James & Company when his uncle, Floyd James retired from that position. Like Floyd one of Billy’s biggest jobs was leading by example and holding together the large group of disparate family members that represented Mr. T.L. James’ legacy.

Billy was a past Louisiana President and Lifetime Director of the National Associated General Contractors. A life-long member of the Louisiana Purchase Council of the Boy Scouts, he was recognized by Pack 45 of the Thunderbird District, Ruston for his positive actions toward Scouting. He received the National Achievement Award from the Fellowship of Christian Athletes for his lifelong service to the organization. He was a member of the board of directors of the Jefferson Bank & Trust, Pan American Insurance Company, Ruston State Bank and Lincoln General Hospital; a founder of Bulk Transport Trucking Company of Louisiana. Billy was a life-long member of Trinity United Methodist Church where he was christened and confirmed as a child. The family is grateful to Leslie Michael, Sharonda Wiley, Marla Dill, Teresa Mardis and Lazonia Johnson for their loyal and caring support, to LaGrant Tolston for 50 years of loyal and faithful service, and to the many caregivers who attended him during his illness.

Visitation will be held on Saturday September 26, 2015 from 9:00 AM to 10:45 AM at Trinity United Methodist Church, 1000 Woodward Ave, Ruston, LA. Services will follow immediately at 11:00. Burial will be at the Greenwood Cemetery in Ruston under the direction of Kilpatrick Funeral Home in Ruston
