BURK DROWNING VICTIM BURIED Funeral Held Sunday for Manley Boy Special to The Record News
BURKBURNETT, Texas, July 5 - Funeral services were conducted Sunday afternoon for Wyatt Walton Manley, 8, son of Mr. and Mrs. Walton W. Manley, who was drowned Saturday night in a farm tank northeast of Devol. The rites were conducted by Rev. A. B. Hughes, the pastor, at the Devol Baptist Church and burial was in the Burkburnett Cemetery under the direction of the Owens & Brumley Funeral Home. The boy was drowned as he and several other youths were swimming in teh tank, near Cedric Scholl. Young Manley and Dan Weaver, 9, remainted in the water as the others went to a farmhouse a short distance away. When the two boys returned to the tank and found that Manley had disappeared. The body was recovered an hour and a half later but more than four hours of effort to revive him failed. The Burkburnett Fire Department's first aid squad used an inhalator in the resuscitation effort. The youth is survived by his parents; two brothers, Robert L. and Leonard Neal Manley, both of Devol, and his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. W. W. Manley Sr., Mr. and Mrs. L. M. J. M. Harvey, Glennville Glennville, Ga. March 27. Pro. J. M. Harvey, aged 62 years, died at his home last night after suffering several weeks from a stroke of paralysis. Mr. Harvey had been superintendent of Glennville schools for nine years and only last fall was it necessary for him to relinquish his duties on account of failing health. Mr. Harvey was born in Yatesville, Ga. Upson County in 1867 and during the last forty years has been one of the prominent educators in South Georgia. In Glennville, where he served as head of the schools for a long time, he has a host of friends who are sorrowed at his passing. The funeral will be held at the Baptist church tomorrow morning with the Rev. J. D. Rabun, of Lyons, in charge of the services, Rev. S. S. Mathis, the present pastor of the church. The pallbearers are H. C. Dubberly, W. A. Dubberly, R. C. Dubberly, P. R. Kicklighter, S. J. Kicklighter and R. C. DeLoach. The deceased is survived by his wife, five brothers, W. C. Harvey of Brooklet, M. H. Harvey of Thomaston, E. M. Harvey of Yatesville, L. B. Harvey of Forsyth, T. W. Harvey of Tampa Fla. three sisters, Mrs. B. D. Harden of Alachua, Lla. Mrs. L. L. Butts of Thomaston and Mrs. E. B. Elliot of Conyers. There are two sons and four daughters. The sons are Prof. J. D. Harvey of Pavo and M. C. Harvey of Jacksonville, Fla. The daughters are Mrs. Roy Nelson of Waycross, Mrs. Eugene Hodges of Glennville, Miss Josephine Harvey of Pavo, and Miss Ruth Harvey of Jefferson. Out of respect for the man who spent several years at the head of the Glennville schools, all of the business during the funeral hour. C. M. Mother Mrs. Nelson Dies At Glennville Glennville, Ga., March 10. - Mrs. J. M. Harvey, age 61, died at her home here this afternoon. Mrs. Harvey was a prominent and loved lady. She was very active in church work and a member of the Glennville Baptist church. Her health had been failing for some time. She is survived by four daughters, Mrs. J. F. Graham of Atlanta, Mrs. L. R. Nelson of Reidsville, Mrs. E. A. Hodges and Miss Ruth Harvey, both of Glennville; two sons, M. C. Harvey of Jacksonville, and J. D. A man in the ranching and farming business who had lived in Coleman County most of his life died Sunday, Oct. 17, 1971 at approximately 12:10 p.m., and was later pronounced dead on arrival at Overall-Morris Memorial Hospital. He was Sumner McKinley, 61, of Route 2, Coleman, who was born Dec. 14, 1909 in Callahan County, the son of Joe and Sally Mayfield. Mr. McKinley was a member of Central Baptist Church and Baird Masonic Lodge, No. 522. Services will begin Wednesday, Oct. 20 at 10 a.m. in Stevens Memorial Chapel, with the Rev. Ed Bigham, pastor of Central Baptist Church, officiating there and during interment rites in Coleman City Cemetery. A service for Roy J. Newkirk Sr. will begin at 1 p.m. Monday at Memorial Gardens Funeral Chapel. Mr. Newkirk died Friday, April 24, at his Vancouver home. He was 77. Born Aug. 19, 1914, in St. Augustine, Fla. Mr. Newkirk joined the American Merchant Marine in 1935, retiring with the rank of captain in 1980. He also served with the Navy during the Korean War. He was a member of the Master, Mates & Pilots Union and the Merchant Marine Veterans Association. After retirement, Mr. Newkirk was an advisor to Clark County Sea Scouts. He had lived in Vancouver since 1972. AKINS, J.C., 88, of St. Petersburg, died Thursday February 5, 2004 at St. Anthony's Hospital. Born in Duluth, Georgia, he grew up in Atlanta, Georgia during the Great Depression. At age 12, he started working as a paper carrier for the Atlanta Journal. He was first promoted to the Complaint Desk and then continued on to become the City Circulation Director until 1951 when he came to St. Petersburg to accept the position of Circulation Director of The Evening Independent. He remained with the Independent through 1954. In late 1958, he designed and built his first car wash, Presto Car Wash on Pasadena Avenue, which made him one of the early pioneers in the full service car wash industry. He later built the Eldorado Car Wash of North Dale Mabry Highway in Tampa. He was a member of the International Car Wash Association and the Southeastern Car Wash Association. In 1990, he was awarded the distinctive "Lifetime Achievement Award" by the Southeastern Car Wash Association. He served on the Grand P rix Board of Directors for several years. He was an active member of the First United Methodist Church for over 52 years. lie is survived by his wife of 68 years, Millie; four daughters, Sue A. Martin, Judith A. Brown, Jill A. Cullum, and Jane A. Lane; nine grandchildren; and twelve great- grandchildren. Visitation will he Sunday, Feb. 8 from 4-6 p.m. at Anderson-McQueen Funeral Home Ninth Street Chapel, 2201 9th St. N. Kessler , retired developer, builder of Days Inns Mr. Kessler, 77, died Thursday of complications from surgery at Emory University Hospital. A member of the board of directors, he organized the construction of the New Ebenezer Retreat and Conference Center in 1975. He also spent many hours at Jerusalem Lutheran Church, constructing the Sunday school building and renovating the historic church sanctuary. Ben Finley, 70, of Sanger, died Monday March 31, 2014 at Senior Care Center in Denton, TX. Ben was born on April 15, 1943 in Bridgeport, TX to Charlie and Mary (Stephens) Finley. He was married to Ann Young on July 1, 1966 in Los Fresnos, TX. He played basketball on a scholarship at Decatur Baptist College. Ben was a member of the First Baptist Church, where he was very active in the Deacon Family Ministry. He also was a faithful member of his Sunday School Class since 1977, and had been a past president of the Sanger Lions Club. He owned and operated Sanger Mirror and Glass for many years before he retired. Benjamin H. Snider, son of Benjamin Snider I and Margaret F. Waldron Snider was born December 31, 1840. He was given his father's name as given to a little brother who had died two years earlier. The two little brothers were laid to rest in the Snider Vault of his ancestors in Colonial Park Cemetery, Savannah's old historical burial ground. A 22 year old sister, Julia Ann, died in 1847 and was laid to rest with the two little brothers. Their father died in Havana, Cuba, in 1852 and his remains returned to Savannah for burial. Their widowed mother bought two lots, #449 and #450 in Savannah's Laurel Grove North Cemetery before moving to Macon, Georgia and had her immediate family moved there from Colonial Park Cemetery. Along with her husband, Jimmy, she is survived by her children, Sandy Bailey and her husband, Ed, of Grovetown, Frank Lord of Augusta, Ronnie Lord and his wife, Priscilla, of Belvedere, Tina Green and her husband, Raymond, of Martinez, Barbara Johnson and her husband, Jay, of North Augusta, and Sabrina Fulcher and her husband, Shane, of Waynesboro; her sister, Sara Hammick and her husband, Rod, of Beaufort, South Carolina; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Margie Rester, in 1981; her granddaughter, Laura Lee Yonce, in 2008; her brother, Amos Luke, earlier this year; and by her parents, Leonard G. and Bobbie Ann Heath Luke. She was a member of Providence Baptist Church. Prior to her retirement, she was the manager of the deli at K-Mart in North Augusta. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star Hephzibah Lodge 312, and Alee Temple and Shrine Club of Augusta. She was a wonderful cook and a loving and devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. Rincon- William Thomas "Billy" Hinely, 78, passed away on April 30, 2012 at Effingham Extended Care Facility after a long illness. He was born in Savannah, moved with his family to Tampa, FL for a number of years, and later moved back to Effingham County with his family for the remainder of his life. He graduated from old Rincon High School. He began his career at Union Camp Corporation in Savannah, retiring as a mill maintenance superintendent after 41 years of service. He was a lifetime member of Goshen United Methodist Church serving in numerous positions. He taught the Adult Sunday School Class for over 35 years. Of all his many property holdings he acquired throughout his lifetime, not one held the special place in his heart as the 18 acre farm he purchased on Ebenezer Road after he was first married and where he raised his three children. He raised and sold various forms of livestock on this farm including cattle and hogs as well as planting and harvesting several acres of feed. He loved tending to his large vegetable garden each and every year for most of his life. Even though he moved his family from the farm in 1970, the property still resides in the family today and is forevermore known as the "Old Place". He loved the water whether it was fishing at Ebenezer Creek, boating on the Savannah River, shrimping in the Broad River at his SC place, or vacationing at the beach in St. Petersburg, FL. "Powee" was an exceptionally gentle man, a loving husband, father and grandfather, as well as a loyal friend. There are no words to describe how much he will be missed by his family. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ralph Thomas and Evelyn Morgan Hinely, as well as his younger brother of four years, Edgar Hinely. Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Omie Exley Hinely of Rincon; a sister Fay Hinely Waldhour of Rincon; a daughter, Debra Hinely Calhoun of Springfield; two sons, Mark Thomas Hinely of Newington and Dale William Hinely of Springfield; a son-in-law, Christopher Kellton Calhoun of Springfield; a daughter-in-law, Wanda Ambrose Hinely of Newington; 8 grandchildren; and 7 great-grandchildren. She worked at Lufkin Electric and then worked for a convenience store until 2012. She enjoyed going to church, and loved her family and friends, playing '42' and traveling. CARRELL, Barbara Jean Passed away on October 17, 2014. She was born October 7, 1938 in Cooper, Texas. Shortly thereafter, she and her parents moved to Dallas. She graduated from South Oak Cliff H.S. in 1957. She attended NTSU receiving B.S. and Masters Degrees. She taught Business at Kimball H.S. in Oak Cliff in 1961 and later became a Guidance Counselor. She transferred to Bryan Adams H.S. in 1977; remaining there until her retirement in 1993. She was an active member in the Vanguard Chapter of ABWA from 1967 to 2013 serving as President three times. Barbara accepted Jesus as her Savior at age 14 and was an active member in various congregations, most recently the Highland Oaks Church of Christ. She was preceded in death by her parents, Aubrey and Gladys Carrell. She is survived by an abundance of cousins and dear friends who have treasured her kindness and cheerfulness for decades. A memorial service will be held at 1 PM on Friday at Hilliard First Baptist Church in Hilliard, Florida. Mrs. Sims was born October 5, 1934 in Irwin County, Georgia to the late John B. and Elizabeth Whitley Harper. She grew up in Ocilla and graduated from Ocilla High School. In 1955, she married the love of her life, William Hartwell Sims, Jr. They raised their three children Denise, Sharron and Bill in Jacksonville, Florida. They moved to Hilliard, Florida in 1971 to live in the home that Hartwell had built. Mrs. Sims volunteered in the library for the City of Hilliard, Florida until she started attending Florida Junior College in Jacksonville to obtain her Associate in Arts degree. She later became employed as a media specialist at the College. She was an active member of the Hilliard First Baptist Church for over 40 years. She directed the senior adult ministry, served as a greeter, and volunteered in the nursery. She was a member of the Red Hat Society, the Frisky Girls, the Walkers, and loved being included in the Bessent family reunions. She is survived by her three children and their spouses: Denise & Tom Perrin of Tallahassee, Florida, Sharron & Gerald Stone of Anderson, South Carolina, and Bill & Laura Sims of Grayson; ten grandchildren; four great-granddaughters; two sisters: Lanelle & Dr. Dale Huff of Prattville, Alabama and Rae & Richard Cobb of Raleigh, North Carolina; a brother: Lamar & Ginger Whitley of Rochelle; a brother-in-law: Marion H.
